The goal of Routt County United Way’s Holiday Exchange Market will be to bring together the entire community in sharing, so that all families can enjoy quality holiday gifts and meals no matter what their financial means. And all families can take pleasure in donating something to a common cause.
In 2019, the Holiday Exchange Market served over 188 families, serving as a critical need during a difficult time of year for so many. Thank you to everyone who helps make this event so successful!
The purpose of Routt County United Way’s Holiday Exchange Market is to assist struggling individuals and families in Routt County at a very tough time of year. Usually, this program comes at a time where many people have just squeaked through mud season and are living hand-to-mouth until the ski season starts. Some folks are hired early but their paycheck is not effective for two to three weeks after they start working. This time can be extremely tough.
But, rather than one-way giving as before, the goal of Routt County United Way’s Holiday Exchange Market will be to bring together the entire community in sharing, so that all families can enjoy quality holiday gifts and meals no matter what their financial means. And all families can take pleasure in donating something to a common cause.
We ask struggling families to participate in the Market either by volunteering for 2 hours or by donating $10.

How does the program work?
The program works by everyone involved donating something: volunteer time, new winter clothing, food cards, money or new toys.
Gift recipients are invited to participate by either volunteering somewhere in the community for 2 hours or making a $10 donation to the Market. There are many volunteer opportunities in our town or the recipient may choose to help at the Market. If a family member cannot volunteer for 2 hours, the family can donate $10 to the Market.
This way, everyone who participates also gives something to make it a success.
Individuals, churches, organizations and businesses donate all the new winter clothing, money, food cards and/or new toys to the Holiday Exchange Market.
Routt County United Way’s Holiday Exchange Market is going to take a community to make it happen. The easiest way to begin participating is to click the blue button. A small effort on your part will make someone’s holiday brighter.
Our biggest needs are donations of new winter boots and coats for children in all sizes, winter gloves and hats for adults, and gifts for teens such as; musical instruments, art supplies, Bluetooth speakers, and beanies with Bluetooth headphones. We are also collecting new children’s toys for all ages and multiple donations of $25 food gift cards from local grocery stores. We also need heavy duty garbage bags in black or green so kids can’t see what their parents picked out.

Who will be invited to “shop” at the Market?
Families or individuals in need are referred or invited by a Routt County Health and Human service agency to participate and “shop” in the Market. The names, sex and ages of each family member is recorded for shopping. One or two adult members of each family is invited to shop for a couple of items, such as adult hats or gloves, children’s boots or winter coats.
Each family also receives a grocery gift card to shop for their own food.
